The QWERTY keyboard was laid out specifically to slow typists down. The early machines were rough and they jammed and failed frequently when you typed fast on them.

Since most people are right handed the most frequently used letters were assigned to the left hand. When Samuel Morse developed the Mores Code the exact opposite occurred. The most frequently used letters are the simplest to send. If you note the code below "E" is a dot. "T" is a dash. The first and second most commonly used letters. Then "A", "N" and so forth. Note how many of the easily transmitted letters are found on the left side of the keyboard.
